Assorted Notes

If you haven't noticed, Rick Hummel has joined the blogging revolution.  His first submission deals with bringing back the former Cardinals (such as Jack Wilson and Edgar Renteria).  He's not big on either of those guys and makes a very interesting point about Renteria coming from Detroit and LaRussa's close relationship to Leyland.  If Leyland doesn't think Edgar has much left, I'm sure he'll pass that on to TLR.

The Secret could be getting out.  Jose Oquendo is going to talk to Seattle about their managerial slot.  I hope he gets it.  He's been waiting quite a while for a chance and we still don't know when LaRussa will step down here in St. Louis.  Besides, if he's going to fail, it's probably best that he does it away from a town where he's held in such high regard.  Might not be as disappointing to him or the fans.

Juan Encarnacion goes the technical route and files for free agency, even though he likely won't ever play again.  Sounds like he's taken to avoiding most everyone, which is sad to see.  I can understand not wanting to be hounded by media and the like, but you'd think he'd be more receptive to seeing his former teammates.  It's a tramatic experience, though, and everyone deals with things in their own way.

Matthew Leach got a mailbag up at the official site yesterday.  He advises much skepticism as we hear reports this winter (and any winter).  Which makes a lot of sense, because when you are bored and not much is happening, it's got to be tempting to just make up/embellish something and see where it goes.
