St. Louis Cardinals
October is such a slow month for teams not in the postseason. (Case in point--the top story on the official site is about a
former Cardinal still playing.) I had four plans for October blogging. You've seen two of them (the report card for the Cardinals and grading my preseason predictions), one of them will be coming on Halloween and the other was the UCB Roundtable, which is still going strong.
So what to do in the meantime? The middle infield is getting a lot of focus, since it's the most obvious glaring need since the young pitchers in the 'pen have eased some of those fears. There's no easy answer there, though. Rafael Furcal is drawing a lot of attention, especially since he now seems to be healthy, but will cost plenty of money being that he's the only real free agent solution out there. I have a feeling signing Furcal would be to a contract many would regret before it was done.
Orlando Hudson's name has been bandied about, but VEB
took a good look at him recently. That analysis really puts some cold water on that idea.
Really, trading for a young, blocked prospect (as that VEB link mentions with the Angels or Rays) would probably be the best thing. Payroll costs would stay down, which would help fill other holes, and it would give the Cardinals a little more youth as well. (Assuming Tony would play him instead of another season of Aaron Miles.)
I hope there will be quite a bit of action once the World Series is over. If nothing else, it helps fill this space!
