R.A. Dickey Plays Wiffleball

Posted on July 17, 2012 at 2:30 PM
R.A. Dickey has been a fascinating story this season.  He made a lot of off-field news before the year with his book, Wherever I Wind Up, a book that is still sitting in my "to be reviewed" stack. There's no doubt that it made an impact in the baseball world, however, with its candid portrayal of Dickey's life.

Then there's the fact that he's been one of the top pitchers in baseball this season.  Of course, we know all about Tony La Russa's supposed "snub" of Dickey to start the All-Star Game, going instead with Matt Cain and how all the Met fans were up in arms about it.  Matthew Leach asked Dickey if the catharsis of writing the book has helped with his pitching this year and Dickey didn't discount it.  I can well imagine being able to focus on baseball and not having to continue to deal with a hidden trauma could only help your results.

Whatever the case, Dickey's become a sudden star, though "sudden" may seem strange to use on a guy that made his debut in the bigs back in 2001.  Still, being a knuckleballer, he's a young 37 and could still have another 10 years in front of him, if he follows Tim Wakefield's example.

I was sent along this clip of Dickey at the Fan Cave, heading out to a New York playground to learn some Wiffleball pitches from ordinary fans.  (To be fair and honest, there was a monetary incentive to post, though all of the wording is my own.)  There's even a little unintentional dig at Cardinal fans, as this was apparently recorded early in the season.  He says at the end "maybe I'll throw the first Mets no-hitter."  If only that were still the case.....

(This was first published on Sunday, but now without the autoplay I'm bumping it up.)
