Matt Holliday is the Calvary?

Daniel has graciously turned over the keys to me for the day, and as I understand it, I am the first female writer to be featured over here at C70 at the Bat. Why he picked me, I'll never know, but let's see if we can have a little fun, shall we?

My name is Angela Weinhold. For the most part, you can find my work over at my website, Diamond Diaries, although I have recently picked up an editing position for Bill over at i70 Baseball to go with my writing there, and on rare occassions you might also be subjected to my scatter-brained thoughts on various radio shows like UCB and i70 (I'm going to break the hyperlink button pretty soon). But let's talk baseball...

Today is a good day for Cardinal Nation, as today is the day that Matt Holliday arrives back from the disabled list. We need some good news, right? I mean really, this whole five game losing streak is just not going to work around here, especially since I think I'm supposed to be here to bring some Susie Sunshine to this corner of the internet. I'm pretty sure I did that with my post over at Diamond Diaries for today, and since I'm writing this post after suffering through the entire 10-0 drubbing from last night,... well, I'm going to try.

Really, Holliday coming back could not come at a better time. After watching him take batting practice up in Milwaukee this past Saturday night, it is obvious to me that he has lost nothing off of his swing while missing in action with a sore leg. I'm not sure I have seen baseballs fly farther than I have while watching him during BP. He truly could be the shot in the arm that this team desperately needs, especially a day after seeing the boys scuffle their way through last night.

What's intriguing to me is how many of these boys taking major league at bats this year started the season with the Memphis Redbirds, or would have started there if not for another injury. Don't get me wrong, I'm a honk for the Baby Birds, but I'm just not interested in seeing Pete Kozma and Andrew Brown take just too many at bats right now, especially when I could be having Matt Holliday and David Freese instead.

Don't freak out - I'm about to give you the numbers for players that have been 'the replacements' for the year, in all their horrid glory:

Don't get me wrong, these guys have worked their butts off and done everything they could to be adequate fill-ins for the time being, but it is past time to start getting the big boys back. With Holliday off the DL today and David Freese ahead in his rehab, things could start snapping back in the place as far as the everyday lineup goes.

Wait, you want to talk about the pitching staff?

Maybe tomorrow...

Smiling over here. Great post. Yes, it's good to see Matt Holliday is coming back to a town near you.

Thank you! It really couldn't come at a better time. :)
