Exit Interview: Joe Kelly

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 8:15 PM
To give myself a reason to look back on this season, I've started this series of blog posts to review each player that spent time in St. Louis during 2012.  More summaries than anything, I imagine the player coming into Mike Matheny's office and having a short conference before heading home for the winter.

This series is brought to you by Burton History Trees.  You already know that the code c70 gets you 10% off your order, but did you know that, for a limited time, the Cardinal tree is already 25% off?  Combine the two and you'll get a $40 tree for $27 or a framed $135 version for $91.  Don't miss this chance for unique Cardinal memorabilia.  The tree will be updated to reflect the 2012 season as well.  Get yours today!

Player: Joe Kelly

Season stats: 5-7, 3.53, 24 games, 107 IP, 112 H, 10 HR, 36 BB, 75 K, 1.38 WHIP

Hero/Goat: Hero once, Goat twice

Overall grade: A-

Positives: If anyone had told you that Kelly would be the first one up from Memphis back in the spring, you'd likely said, "Who?"  Even though Kelly was a third round pick in 2009, he hadn't made the prospect waves that Shelby Miller or Trevor Rosenthal had.  Kelly, though, was the one pitching well at Memphis when the call came and he answered it with gusto.  He didn't always get the support, but he usually kept the team in the game at the very least.  He was moved to the bullpen when Chris Carpenter came back and didn't miss a beat, throwing seven innings out of the pen with a 2.57 ERA and six strikeouts to just one walk.  It was his scoreless work in Game 5 of the NLDS that started the Cards' comeback.

Negatives: The biggest problem with Kelly was that he couldn't go deep into games.  He got a little better about it as the season went along, but he never finished the seventh inning and only three times all year got an out after the sixth (in games he started, at least).  The league started to catch up to him some down the stretch, which was why he got bumped from the rotation instead of Lance Lynn (though they did flipflop a couple of times).  He also allowed Game 7 of the NLCS to get out of hand, though that was more about the situation that he was put into and the fluke hit off the bat of Hunter Pence rather than him lacking in anything.

Outlook: Kelly seemed to be able to dial it up a little bit in the bullpen, but chances are he's going to be vying for one of those rotation slots.  He, Miller and Rosenthal would all seem to be on the outside looking in, though if Garcia does need surgery that could change quickly.  Kelly will likely have the inside track due to his experience, but he'll need to have a very good spring training to hold off any challengers.
