St. Louis Cardinals
When Derrick Goold Tweeted it a few moments ago, I was sure that it was a joke given the date and that there was no disclaimer with it. Sadly, though, it's completely true: Matt Holliday
had an appendectomy and will be out at least 3-4 weeks. (OK, Will Carroll, noted injury expert, says more like 2-4 and
could be less, but Holliday is being told the original time frame.)
Most of the columns and analysis, the little that's out there in the few minutes since this came down, is behind my work firewall and I can't read it, so if you see anything that contradicts my speculations here, go with that instead. That said, what does this mean for the team?
Well, if it is the short-term result, it might not be as bad as we feared when first seeing the news. I don't think the Cards will get buried in two weeks, especially with three games against the Pirates. That West Coast trip could be a doozy, though.
I wonder what the Cardinals think of Allen Craig in left field. If they are comfortable with that, could we see him on a regular basis and the promotion of Matt Carpenter? Apparently the only other OF on the 40-man roster is Adron Chambers and I'd be pretty surprised if they brought him up. They could add Nick Stavinoha to the 40-man and have him as an option, though I can't say people would be excited about that.
Apparently John Mozeliak has said they'll wait 24 hours to see whether they will DL Holliday. That makes no sense, because you can't play short handed for 10 days or whatever and it's likely it'll be past the 15 days. It could be that they are waiting to see what kind of roster configuration they want, which is perfectly legitimate, but if they don't DL Holliday, there's something really wrong.
We'll have to wait and see what exactly the team does and hopefully Holliday can have one of those Pujols-like speedy recoveries, but so far, Cardinal fans are ready to send the 2011 season back to sender.
