Shows What I Know

I've occasionally said that Albert Pujols reads this blog, because I'll write something and he'll either go out and justify or, more likely, take offense at it and go off.  If that's the case, perhaps Bud Norris reads his press clippings as well.

Yesterday, I said that Norris's "hold on the Cardinals is starting to weaken," due to the fact they'd been able to get to him some this year.  However, that wasn't the case last night, as Norris took a no-hitter into the seventh before winning yet another game against the Redbirds.

I wasn't able to see much of this game due to various pre-trip preparations that had to be made, but it doesn't sound like I missed much.  Obviously the Hero of the game was Lance Berkman, who kept the Cards from being no-hit and shut out.  Albert Pujols got the only other hit, meaning Ryan Theriot's hit streak went by the boards.  Sounds like AP almost kept his homer streak alive as well with a deep fly that was caught in center.

Jamie Garcia probably gets the Goat for being very inconsistent with his pitching.  He didn't allow much, just three runs, but he also threw more pitches in five innings than he's thrown in some complete games.  Ryan Franklin did a very good job out of the pen and will be getting more and more pressure innings going forward, I'm fairly sure.  Jason Motte allowed the last run in the ninth, but by then the story was pretty much written.

However, there are going to be games like that during the season.  Games where you just can't dent the other pitcher.  Games where the other guy has your number.  You shake them off and move on.

Day 3 of the draft is a roster-filler type of day, with only the rarest of rare gems getting to the bigs from that level.  Future Redbirds will have all the details, of course, but the thing that caught most people's eye from yesterday was that the Cards took one of Colby Rasmus's younger brothers.  Casey Rasmus plays at Liberty University as a catcher and, from reports, has a nice swing.  From older brother's comments, sounds like he'll sign, but we'll have to wait and see.

Yesterday, the Cards and Royals announced that the upcoming series between the two teams would be dedicated to tornado relief.  "Teams United For Joplin" is the theme and Josh from Pitchers Hit Eighth was there for the announcement.  Check out all the details over at that site.

Cards try to win the series tonight by sending Lance Lynn out to face J.A. Happ.  Obviously, Lynn's never faced the Astros before and looks to improve on his major league debut.  Perhaps the defense will be better for him in this one.  Here's Happ's line against the Redbirds:

They've not seen him a lot, but they've been able to do fairly well against him.  We'll see if that will hold true tonight as well.

Remember, starting tomorrow the guest posters arrive, raising the quality level of this blog immensely.  Don't get too used to it--I'll be back a week from Monday!
