The Biggest Series Yet?

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 7:35 AM
Filed Under: Atlanta Braves | St. Louis Cardinals
Well, the Mets did the Cardinals no favors yesterday, losing both games of their doubleheader with the Braves.  St. Louis hosts the Braves today, but sit 7.5 out instead of 6.5, meaning that even a sweep has them down quite a bit.

That said, with the Braves struggling, a sweep would at least give some fire to the last couple of weeks of the season.  This really is the last chance for the Cards to do something with 2011.  Whether they can or not is a different story.

So, who is leading the last charge?

There's a reason the team traded for Edwin Jackson.  It wasn't necessarily to be the one to hold the last line, though.  Jackson definitely has the ability to go out and throw a great game.  He's thrown fairly solid ball his last four times out, showing perhaps a bit of consistency that we've not seen from him.  Since that miserable game in Milwaukee, where he was left out to be shelled, he's 3-1 with a 2.58 ERA, so that is a good sign for the Redbirds.  Here's Jackson's career against the Braves:

There's not much there, though what is there is good for Jackson and the Cardinals.  I know Jackson's been in the AL a lot, but I would have thought he'd have more experience against this group.  Hopefully he can continue this trend and keep the Cards in the game tonight.

He'll likely need to do that as the Braves are running out Randall Delgado.  Not surprisingly, none of the Cardinals have seen Delgado, unless they did it in the minor leagues.  You know what that means, of course--likely another evening with little offensive production.  Rookie pitchers have had great success tearing up the Cards in the past.

Looking at his numbers, he's only thrown three games and he's not gone deep in any of them.  Which you might think is a good thing, until you remember the Braves have Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel at the back of their bullpen.  The odds are the Cards are going to have to score early and get a lead so as not to run into those two.

The Cards don't have a lot of hope, but that flame is still flickering.  This weekend we'll see if it can catch hold or be extinguished for the season.

You may notice on the top of the page (besides the new logo that was designed by Jon of Redbird Dugout) that there's a "Conversations With C70" page there.  You'll find links to all the podcasts, plus links to the pages of those I interview and those that provided promos for that episode.  I also put up the latest episode last night, where I talk with Steve Keane, a Mets blogger.  Steve's always fun to talk to and I hope that you enjoy listening to us!
