For the second straight year, Mr. Shoptaw has gone away on vacation and asked me, Bill Ivie, to kick off a week of guest spots with some words of wisdom.
Where he comes up with the idea that I have words of wisdom to distribute, I have no idea. But it's his blog and if he is willing to turn the keys over to me so that I can destroy everything he has worked so hard for in one day, well, I guess that's what friends are for, right?
Who am I? Oh yeah, I'm Bill. I run
i70baseball.com and can be heard on various internet radio broadcasts, including Gateway To Baseball Heaven with Daniel himself along side me every week. If you don't know who I am, then I am probably failing at my job...shameless self promotion. At any rate,
follow me on Twitter and we will talk about baseball and just about any other random topic you can come up with.
Baseball? Oh fine, we will talk some baseball. (Sorry, I'm not real handy with Star Wars or Castle references, so you'll have to bear with me)
Tony LaRussa will manage in his 5,000 game this weekend. That is almost twice as many games as
Ozzie Smith played in his entire career. I have been one to debate just about every move TLR makes, but the records speak for themselves. The man has been very successful with his formula of managing and who am I to argue with results?
Someone woke up the man they call
Albert Pujols. Earlier in the season we were wondering if he was ever going to figure it out or just how old AP must really be. One weekend against the Cubs and the guy is walking on water again. Funny thing is, every move, catch, position, and swing just begs one question: how much will it cost?
The Cardinals drafted a second baseman that Sports Illustrated projects will be in the majors next season. This brings to mind a few thoughts... a) have they finally given up on Skippy at second, b) is Zach Cox going to remain at third and c) when was the last time the team was made up of this much home-grown talent?
It amazes me to notice that last part. Albert himself represents that talent that came from the farm system. Guys like
Tyler Greene,
Matt Carpenter, Mark Hamilton,
Jon Jay,
Colby Rasmus,
Daniel Descalso,
Yadier Molina, and (even though he was traded in the minors) Adam Wainwright are all home grown, just to name a few. When the team suggested they were going to a farm system focus, I did not know what to think. As of right now, I like it.
There you go, folks. Scatter brained thoughts from a guy that doesn't own this site. Stay tuned this week as far more talented people will give you insight on upcoming series, observations on the team, and some more good natured jabs at the Godfather himself.

Thanks for the tip on Tony LaRussa and 5,000 games. Don't like the guy, but his record does speak for itself.
Very good blog about our Cardinals. You call Skip Schumaker Skippy too. Lovin' that!
Fellow Skippy Schumaker fan, come visit me @ MLBVoice.com and talk some baseball!
