A Salute To A Friend

Blogs, by their nature, tend to be generally ephemeral.  They come and go, started with the highest of goals and the strongest of motivations, only to come up against real life and then drift off into the ether.  Some just get sporadic, some occasionally come back for a while, but often when a blog leaves the blogosphere, it's never recognized.  You just figure it out when the same "May 15, 2009" post is there as the most recent activity when you visit.  Or when you try to visit and the domain no longer exists.

So when a blogger makes the conscious decision to hang them up, at least in some regard, it stands out.

When I got into the blogging game, as it were, Mike at Stan Musial's Stance was already there.  I'm not going to say I was reading his blog before I started my site, but when I started forming the United Cardinal Bloggers, Mike was one of the earliest ones in the group.  Once he was in there, he was one of those that I considered my fallback blogs.  If there was a project going on, Mike was going to be involved.  There were others in that group, of course, but I really appreciated what Mike was doing with his site.

Which meant that our time last year with Fox Sports Midwest, when he, Nick and I spent the day with the FSMW people, was one of the biggest highlights of my blogging career.  Not only was the access to the Fox Sports guys impressive, but I was able to spend some time with a couple of guys I really respected and was not disappointed when I met them in person.

When I saw the title of his post today, I was sure that it was just a commentary on the retirement of Tony La Russa.  It was, but it was more than just that.  Just like Tony, Mike had decided to go out on top.  Family obligations--not obligations, because that sounds so negative.  Families are intended to be enjoyed.  It's difficult to juggle spending time with growing kids and spending time writing and researching.  I understand that and there's no question that when that conflict comes up, family has to win.

Mike's not gone completely, of course--he's still going to write over at I70 Baseball and he'll be able to focus more on his hometown Padres at his other blog, plus I'm putting him on notice now that he's going to get an invite to the podcast--but I'll miss his input on UCB projects and seeing his thoughts about the Cards.

Congratulations on a job well done, my friend.  Enjoy the next stage in your life.
